Social marketing is much like face-to-face networking, which is one reason we also call it relational marketing.
The wonderful thing about social media marketing is that entering into one of its sites is a LOT like going to a trade show, convention, association lunch, or business conference. In fact, often it seems to me that it’s the same thing — Busy, chaotic, people everywhere, some you know. Some you don’t. Some who intrigue you, some who simply interest you.
The big difference: Online social marketing is virtual.
I bet I’m very much like you when I attend non-virtual conferences. I put on my best professional face, come in with an elevator speech on the tip of the tongue and business cards in hand. If I’m there, I’m looking to build new relationships, maybe help someone with a connection or an idea. Maybe connect with some others just for fun. And others for mutual business opportunities.
Networking is all about meeting people face-to-face, talking, connecting, chatting, catching up. So is online social marketing.
That big difference again: Online social marketing is virtual. And it’s got that anonymous hide button.
The best social marketers come to sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and industry sites eager to build relationships. They chat, they connect, and they catch up.
My tip of the day: If you are going to jump into social marketing, leap in ready to connect because simply pushing comments and updates out on your page all day is not enough. In fact, that sort of use of social media – especially now that social media sites are hitting the triple digit millions – can do you more harm than good.
Consider the power of the “hide” button. It’s our virtual way of zoning out on what you’re saying – permanently. And anonymously.
